I stayed a couple nights here, just to see what this country was about. There are some resorts up in the Roatan area (islands off the northeast coast), but I decided to go south to the capital instead.
The capital, Tegucigalpa, is built into the hills of this valley, and is beautiful to look at, especially at night. However, there isn't much to do here in town, and most tourism is based on day trips out.
So, on the first day, I went out to hike in Tigre National Park...the first national park in Honduras. It is a 90 square mile park, and I had it all to myself on this Tuesday. It is about 12 miles north of the city, and an hour drive...if that tells you what the roads are like. But, when you make it...beautiful! It reminded me of a tropical version of Olympic National park in Washington.
The second day, I took a trip out to Comayagua. A nice little town, with a beautiful square, a little more than an hour outside the city. You can hike the bell tower in the church off the square and get a great view of the area.
I also attempted to get into the old town center of the capital. But, this is not driving for wimps. I finally arrived in the city center, after taking more than 20 minutes to drive the last 1/2 mile...only to find NO parking around. Then, another 1/2 hour to get the 1/2 mile back out. for future reference, take a cab to get close...then walk the rest. Leave your car at the hotel.
