The Vatican

Favorite things to see in The Vatican

St. Peter's Basilica

Started in the 16th century, it is built on the site of churches dating back to the 4th century.  On the hill where St. Peter was thought to be buried.  

It is the largest church in the world at nearly 250,000 square feet and receives about 20 million visitors annually. 

Sistine Chapel

Built by Pope Sixtus IV in 1473-84 and famously decorated with frescoes by Michelangelo, 

Vatican Museums

Actually a collection of many museums and galleries.  They house the largest collections of ancient sculptures in the world and an incredible selection of art.  Prepare yourself for lines, year round. But, it is worth it!
