A young Republic from the former Yugoslavia with a deep and fascinating history. At times, a part of the Byzantine, Frankish and Hungarian Empires, as well as the Hapsburg and Ottoman Empires. And, of course, the short lived Serbian Empire.
Having regained independence two decades ago, there is still political tensions arising from the cross border religious and ethnic issues.
A fairly small country of less than 30,000 square miles (smaller than South Carolina), it is largely mountainous in the south and flat in the north.

Exploring this city really centers on the fortress overlooking the Danube River. I hope in the future that better care gets taken for its historical treasures.
