June 24th, 2019 - Southern Brazil is beautiful. Honestly, I didn't have any expectations coming in. But, I didn't think I would see something this lush and green at the beginning of winter (remember, it is winter in the southern hemisphere now). They have rolling green hills, lots of farmland, and fields that have pine trees, and palm trees side by side. It is a cool combo to see. I also went up to Gramado...a little German inspired town in the hills north of Porto Alegre. Great chocolate there!
Of course, if you know your history, a German inspired town in Brazil should be no surprise. Then, down Highway 101 to Rio Grande. This highway just off the coast has such a variety of scenery in a few short hours of driving. Open fields of farmland, marshes, pine forests, sandy beaches, more palm trees. Then, finished off the highway ride with a "ferry" ride to Rio Grande. Actually a big barge that is pushed by a tugboat. Not exactly as nice as taking to ferry to Bainbridge Island, but it did the job. Watching them load it made me realize that they must train their loaders by playing Tetris.
From here, I will be heading south again. Down into Uruguay tomorrow, and if the day goes smoothly, all the way to Montevideo.
